Every Nursing Pathway, Explained Clearly

Nursing Education Pathways in India

The Indian Nursing Council (INC) — an autonomous statutory body under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare — sets uniform training standards for nurses, midwives and health visitors across the country. Every recognized pathway leads to registration as a Nurse with your State Nursing Council.

  • ANM (Auxiliary Nurse & Midwife) — 2-year diploma, registers as R.ANM
  • GNM (General Nursing & Midwifery) — 3½-year diploma, registers as R.N & R.M
  • B.Sc Nursing (Basic) — 4-year university degree, registers as R.N & R.M
  • Post Basic B.Sc Nursing — upgrade route for working GNM nurses (2 yrs regular / 3 yrs distance)
  • M.Sc Nursing, M.Phil & Ph.D — postgraduate specialization and research routes
  • 11+ one-year Post Basic Diplomas — Critical Care, OT, Midwifery, Oncology, Psychiatric & more

Do You Really Need NEET for Nursing?

NEET is not universally mandatory for nursing admission in India — the requirement depends on the specific institute and state, which is exactly the kind of detail our counsellors track for you.

  • AIIMS Delhi & its network conduct their own separate B.Sc Nursing entrance exam — not NEET
  • BHU, JIPMER and AFMC admit B.Sc Nursing through a valid NEET-UG score
  • Andhra Pradesh has made NEET mandatory for B.Sc Nursing from 2026–27
  • Many state & private colleges still admit via Class 12 merit or their own state-level CET (e.g. UP CNET)
  • GNM admission is state-level — entrance test or merit-based, with no single national exam
  • Typical eligibility: 10+2 with PCB & English for B.Sc (any stream for GNM), 40–50% aggregate, age from 17 years

Take Your Nursing Career Worldwide

Every country requires the same three building blocks: credential evaluation, a licensing exam, and proof of English proficiency. The specific exams and bodies just differ by destination.

  • USA — NCLEX-RN exam, CGFNS credential evaluation, VisaScreen certificate, H-1B/EB-3 visa
  • UK — NMC registration, CBT in India, OSCE clinical exam in the UK, IELTS/OET
  • Canada — NNAS credential review, NCLEX-RN, province-specific licensing
  • Australia — AHPRA registration, NCLEX-RN or OBA exam, IELTS 7.0+/OET B
  • Gulf (UAE, Saudi, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain) — DataFlow verification + DHA/HAAD/SCFHS/QCHP/MOH Prometric exam
  • Germany — Anerkennung credential recognition + B2-level German proficiency

I had no idea ANM, GNM and B.Sc Nursing were even different until my first call with Lakshyashila. They mapped my marks and budget to GNM, and I'm now in my second year at an INC-recognized college.

The NCLEX-RN and CGFNS process felt overwhelming until I had a step-by-step checklist. I'm now a licensed Registered Nurse in the USA, and I still recommend Lakshyashila to juniors.

Nursing Career — Common Questions

No, not universally. AIIMS Delhi conducts its own separate B.Sc Nursing entrance exam, while BHU, JIPMER and AFMC require a valid NEET-UG score through MCC counselling. Andhra Pradesh has made NEET mandatory for B.Sc Nursing from 2026–27, but many state and private colleges across India still admit through Class 12 merit or their own state-level entrance test. We help you identify exactly which path applies to your target colleges.
ANM is a 2-year diploma registering you as an R.ANM. GNM is a 3½-year diploma (3 years for batches from 2015–16 onward) registering you as R.N & R.M. B.Sc Nursing (Basic) is a 4-year university degree, also registering you as R.N & R.M, but with a broader academic foundation and stronger global mobility. All three are recognized by the Indian Nursing Council.
Yes. Working GNM-qualified nurses can pursue Post Basic B.Sc Nursing — 2 years regular or 3 years through distance mode — to upgrade to a full university degree while continuing to practice.
After completing an INC-recognized programme, you register with your State Nursing Council and get listed on the Nurses Registration & Tracking System (NRTS) — India's live national register of nurses maintained by the Indian Nursing Council.
It depends on your destination. The USA, Canada and Australia generally require the NCLEX-RN exam alongside credential evaluation (CGFNS for the USA, NNAS for Canada). The UK requires NMC registration with a CBT and OSCE. Gulf countries require DataFlow verification plus a Prometric exam through the relevant authority (DHA, HAAD, SCFHS, QCHP or MOH). English proficiency through IELTS or OET is required almost everywhere.
Yes, 100% free. Your first counselling session, eligibility assessment, college shortlisting and documentation guidance are all provided at no cost — whether you're planning a career in India or abroad.
